Rosé and Merlot + Spicy Meat Skewers

TIP: Selecting Wines for Wedding Receptions

In this episode, we paired spicy meat skewers with two wines, a Rosé and a Merlot. The Rosé was an unconventional and refreshing antidote to all that garlic and spice. The Merlot had a soft, opulent texture that cushioned the powerful meat flavors. Best of all, serving both wines gave the guests a choice. We also learned a helpful rule of thumb: when you’re buying wine for a party, figure on the same number of bottles as you have guests. In other words, thirty guests will drink a total of about thirty bottles of wine. Finally, enjoy a dry sparkling wine at the reception, but pair a sweet bubbly with the wedding cake. As with all desserts, it’s best to pick a wine that’s slightly sweeter than the cake. So there you have it. Give your guests a choice of wines for the main course, allow one bottle per person, and pair the cake with a sweet sparkler. It’s a formula that’s sure to work for a wedding, or any special occasion.

Sip Tip: Giving Wine as a Gift

When you think about it, wine is just about the perfect gift. You don’t have to worry about the size being right, you don’t have to worry about it matching the décor, and best of all, wine gives the recipient hours of pleasure. It’s especially nice (and easy!) to give wine as a wedding gift. Think about special dishes the couple enjoys making and then choose a wine to match. Simply tie a little card around each bottle saying what the bottle is for. Be sure to include a special bottle of wine, like a great cabernet, that they can drink on their 10th anniversary. So there you have it. A very simple, very personal gift!
